Lindsay Charlton is Project Director for ITV Local, ITV’s new broadband television trial which is running in the ITV Meridian region.
Originally a newspaper journalist who began his career at the Kent Messenger, Lindsay joined Granada TV in Manchester in 1980 as a researcher, later becoming a reporter. In 1984 he joined Thames TV in the current affairs and documentary department, working on programmes such as ‘This Week’, before becoming an early recruit to the fledgling British Satellite Broadcasting company.He joined London News Network in 1992 as a presenter and held a variety of posts including programme editor and Head of News. He also began LNN’s Factual Programmes department making travel and lifestyle shows for the international market. In 1993 he founded the London Bureau, a television public relations firm. Before taking over the full time management of the ITV Local project, Lindsay was the Managing Director of the ITV Meridian licence. It has a staff of 200 people and its main offices are in Maidstone, Whiteley and Newbury. Meridian has three news services and makes a wide range of diverse programming for the southern region. It is now part of the newly merged ITV plc. In 2004 Lindsay and the Meridian management team planned and designed the new £6 million digital television centre built at Whiteley in Hampshire. This proved to be the model for a number of regional ITV studios that have been built during the past three years. A passionate supporter and advocate of regional and local television, he is also a member of the Royal Television Society and a board member of Screen South. Before joining Meridian in April 2002 Lindsay was Managing Director of London Weekend Television. A keen sailor and skier, he is married with two children. |
